Our Program

The course listed in this document is a complete program for Utah State Cosmetology/Barber licensure. This comprehensive program includes instruction in hair, nails, and esthetics. This course will prepare you to pass the licensing examinations and give you the education you need to obtain licensure. Our goal is not only to give you a great education, but to give you everything you need to compete in the world of professional salons and spas.

As a graduate of American Beauty Academy, you will have many career opportunities including the following: Hairstylist, Makeup Artist, Nail Technician, Manicurist/Pedicurist, Color Specialist, Salon Manager, and Salon Owner as well as educational opportunities, for example: Cosmetology Instructor, Product Representative, Apprentice Trainer and Platform Artist. You may also choose to become involved in work for film, theatre, fashion or print.

Course Curriculum

According to state laws and rules, a cosmetology/barber school shall consist of 2000 hours of instruction as shown in the following:

Cosmetology/Barber Curriculum

  • History of cosmetology and barbering
  • Overview of curriculum
  • Business and salon management, including developing clientele, professional image, professional ethics, professional associations, public relations and advertising
  • Personal, client and salon safety including aseptic techniques and sanitary procedures, disinfection and sterilization methods and procedures.
  • Health risks to the cosmetologist/barber
  • Human immune system
  • Bacteriology, sanitation and sterilization, and decontamination and infection control
  • First aid and CPR
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Science of cosmetology and barbering
  • Analysis of the skin, hair and scalp
  • Chemistry of cosmetology/barbering
  • Legal issues including malpractice liability, regulatory agencies and tax laws
  • Utah Cosmetology/Barber Exam review

  • Properties of the hair and scalp
  • Implements, tools and equipment for cosmetology and barbering
  • Hairstyling, including wet and thermal
  • Hair coloring
  • Permanent waving
  • Chemical hair relaxing and thermal straightening
  • Draping, shampooing, rinsing and conditioning
  • Haircutting, including men and women
  • Scissor cutting
  • Razor cutting for men

  • Mustache and beard design
  • Clipper variations
  • Wigs and artificial hair, including hair extensions

Esthetics Curriculum

  • Science of basic esthetics
  • Analysis of the skin
  • Chemistry for basic esthetics
  • Implements, tools and equipment for basic esthetics, including heat lamps and high frequency or galvanic current
  • Electricity and light therapy
  • Limited chemical exfoliation, including pre-exfoliation consultation, post-exfoliation treatments and chemical reactions
  • Packs and masks
  • Skin treatments with and without machines
  • Aromatherapy
  • Temporary removal of superfluous hair
  • Waxing
  • Make-up application
  • Chemistry of cosmetics
  • False eyelashes/eyelash extensions
  • Eyebrow arching

Nail Curriculum

  • Implements, tools and equipment for nails
  • Nail structure and growth

  • Basic manicuring with hand and arm massage
  • Pedicuring, including massage of the lower leg and foot
  • Artificial nail techniques: wraps, gels, tips and acrylic nails
  • Nail art

Teaching Methods

Teaching methods used to teach this curriculum include, but are not limited to, demonstrations, lecture, workbooks, DVDs, hands-on practice, class projects and reading and highlighting textbooks.

When possible, instructors will include the following when teaching new skills:

  1. They will explain the theory behind the skill.
  2. They will demonstrate the skill.
  3. The student will practice the skill on a mannequin.
  4. The student will practice the skill on another student.
  5. The student will practice the skill on a model.
